Thursday Afternoons: Memories & Melodies is a multi-sensory installation created in collaboration with a group of participants at Expressions, a therapeutic day program for individuals with memory loss at Advocate Lutheran General Outpatient Center. Each strip of paper is part of a larger handmade paper that was created using coffee, leftover coffee grounds from the group’s morning coffee, newspaper that the group reads together, and pressed leaves and flowers from the community garden. These materials hold special memories for the participants and the artist. The paper can be inserted through the hand crank music box to create sound, through which memory is converted into a melody.
